You can submit your art between February 1, 2024, and March 15, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

Subject of the Challenge

The Macon-Bibb County Health Department (MBCHD) is launching the “What Does Public Health Mean to You” art challenge to raise awareness, educate, and empower our community on public health services offered by the Macon-Bibb County Health Department. Through the creative medium of art, students will explore services they, their friends, or families may utilize while also stimulating their interest in potential career opportunities in public health. Simultaneously, participants will contemplate how health equity affects their community and the issues some groups face when striving to achieve optimal health outcomes.

About the Art Challenge

MBCHD is encouraging middle school students (6th-8th grade) and high school students (9th-12th grade) to share their ideas—through art—about how public health services can help improve the lives of people in Macon-Bibb County, no matter who they are or where they live.

Public health means promoting healthy lifestyles, adequate healthcare, and disease prevention through the organized efforts of society.

Public health can include:

  • People utilizing services at their local health department, like getting their eyes checked at the vision clinic, learning how to properly install a car seat, or requesting birth and death certificates
  • Environmental health services, such as restaurant inspections and testing for lead in water

Artwork should show how public health can help people receive care and stay healthy. Here are some programs and services that the department of public health offers at the Macon-Bibb County Health Department, but you can choose any part of public health that is meaningful to you:

Resources to Learn More About Public Health

Credible sources of information regarding public health can be found across the internet. We recommend checking out resources from the following organizations:

      Social Determinants of Health

There are some groups of people who often have worse health than the general population, but the contributing factor may not be related to the illness. Rather, these factors are what the public health sector calls a “Social Determinant of Health.”  Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the nonmedical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, as well as the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems can include things like economic stability, educational access and quality, health care access, one’s neighborhood, environment, and their social and community context.

For example, in the United States, 1 in 10 people live in poverty and many people can’t afford things like healthy foods, health care, and housing. Did you know that people with higher levels of education are more likely to be healthier and live longer?  Did you know about 1 in 10 people in the United States don’t have health insurance? People without insurance are less likely to have a primary care provider, and they may not be able to afford the health care services and medications they need. Finally, many people face challenges and dangers they can’t control — like unsafe neighborhoods, discrimination, or trouble affording the things they need. This can have a negative impact on health and safety throughout life.

Positive relationships at home, at work, and in the community can help reduce the negative impact.
