Hancock Health Improvement Partnership Awards Mini-Grants to Local Organizations

HHIP Provides Funding for Health-Improving Initiatives

Hancock Health Improvement Partnership (HHIP) is proud to announce the recipients of the partnership’s 2019-2020 mini-grants. Funded by a grant renewal from the Healthcare Georgia Foundation, 11 organizations in Hancock county will receive resources for their projects focusing on community health and improvement.

Each of the 11 projects funded by the mini-grants reflects one of the three focus areas of HHIP: economic development, healthy environments and literacy. The grant recipients and their funded projects are:

Economic Development

  • Sparta-Hancock Historical Society – $1,000
    • Walking tour of downtown Sparta’s historic district
  • Sparta-Hancock County Historic Preservation Commission – $850
    • Reproduction of copies of state and federal documents along with documents relating to the administration of the Preservation Commission

Healthy Environments & Housing

  • Sparta-Hancock Community Development Corporation – $3,000
    • Establish Mayfield Community Garden on one acre of land within the Mayfield housing property
  • M.E. Lewis Elementary School DAWG Walk Club – $2,000
    • Develop program that encourages physical activity in students
  • Center for Community Development -$3,700
    • Promote agriculture-related activities through the Gardening Project
  • Hancock County Board of Education School Nutrition Program – $2,535
    • Engage students in planting and caring for plants via hydroponic gardens
  • The Kam Kares Foundation, Inc. – $500 (Sponsorship)
    • Sponsorship of the scheduled Spring 2020 4k run

Literacy

  • Second Beulah Health Ministry – $2,240
    • Improve K-12 youths’ reading and writing abilities and teach healthy lifestyle skills through the Community Enrichment Program
  • Hancock County Family Connection Communities in Schools – $4,000
    • Support families and ensure students are reading at grade level and have equal access to a healthy lifestyle
  • Hancock County Public Library – $3,500
    • Promote literacy though the AWE Early Literacy Station, a service for patrons age two to eight that features over 4,000 localized learning activities
  • M.E. Lewis Elementary School – $1,025
    • Helen Ruffin Reading Club will participate in the local and regional Reading Bowl

These 11 projects were chosen from a total of 17 submitted to HHIP during the submission period that ended July 26. All applications were reviewed by a committee of HHIP officers; officers selected grant recipients based on how the projects coincided with HHIP’s goals. HHIP would like to thank everyone that submitted an application for funding, and congratulations to those who received the mini-grant.
