School Based Flu Program 2020
A Unique Flu Season
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, North Central Health District’s regular school-based flu program will look different than it has in the past. We want to give every student the opportunity to receive a regular seasonal flu vaccine while protecting students, school staff and our own health department staff from COVID-19.
Planning For Vaccination
Each county’s school system and health department will have its own unique plans for providing students with flu shots. Planning is based one how COVID-19 is impacting each county, how the school systems are operating and what measures need to be taken to keep everyone involved safe. PLEASE NOTE: this section will continue to be updated as decisions are made and plans are finalized. We will only post information that has been finalized and agreed upon between the county health department and the relevant school/school system.

Preventing the Flu
- Vaccination is the first and most important step in flu prevention.
- Flu shots protect against multiple, common flu viruses.
- Everyone 6 months of age or older should get a flu shot.
- Adults over age 65 and people with weakened immune systems should get a high-dose shot.
- People should get vaccinated before the flu season (in October), but it is never too late to get a shot.
Stop germs from spreading.
- Avoid contact with sick people; if you are sick, stay home.
- If you experience flu-like illness, stay home at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medications.
- Always cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough and throw used tissues in the trash.
- Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
- Disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated.
- Do not touch your nose, mouth or eyes.
