Macon-Bibb County Health Department, Safe Kids Central Georgia join CareSource to host Child Safety Extravaganza June 18

Event Offers Educational Resources, Activities, Prizes and More

MACON – Macon-Bibb County Health Department and Safe Kids Central Georgia will offer resources, education and more at the June 18 Child Safety Extravaganza sponsored by CareSource. Many providers from across the county be at the event designed to raise awareness and educate the community on unintentional childhood injuries/deaths and how to prevent them.

June is National Safety Month and with the recent rise in unintentional deaths in our area, Macon-Bibb County Health Department would like to prevent these deaths from happening throughout the community with awareness, resources, and education.

According to Safe Kids, in the United States in 2018, there were 1,168 unintentional deaths among infants; 1,226 among children ages 1-4; and 692 among children ages 10-14. The data shows Black/African American children were at greater risk of death among the different age groups.

These unintentional safety areas include:

•         Home

•         Car/Motor Vehicle

•         Sports

•         Water

•         Fire

•         Pedestrian

•         Medication

These areas also break down and cover things such as:

•         Child Passenger/Car Seat

•         Hot Car/Heatstroke

•         Teen Driving/Distracted Driving

•         Wheeled Sports/ATV

•         Safe Sleep

•         Falls

•         Furniture tip overs

•         Shootings/ Gun Safety

•         Pools/Open Water

•         Sports safety/Concussion

•         Walking/Biking

•         Fires and Smoke

This event presents an opportunity to work together and get educated on how to protect children from these unintentional injuries and possible deaths.

Several local agencies will be in attendance including First Choice Primary Care, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Bureau of Investigation – Child Fatality Review Program, Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, and many more.

The extravaganza will be on Saturday, June 18 at Central City Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy the fun, games, prizes, giveaways, educational activities, music, and more! Take part in the Child Safety Extravaganza on Juneteenth to help share and educate our community about child safety best practices.

The event is in partnership with Safe Kids, a nonprofit organization working to help families and communities keep kids safe from injuries, and CareSource, a nonprofit, multi-state health plan recognized as a national leader in managed care.
