NCHD Investigating Outbreak of Gastrointestinal Illness

SHARE

North Central Health District (NCHD) is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in more than 50 overnight campers at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Putnam County.

Symptoms began late Wednesday/early Thursday and include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. All campers have now returned home.

The camp is closed to overnight campers this weekend to allow for cleaning. The camp operators have hired an outside company for cleaning services. Weekend daytime activities will continue as scheduled. NCHD environmental staff also recommended the camp’s pool be closed for cleaning.

NCHD epidemiologists are conducting a contact investigation to identify the illness and its source. Specimens have been sent to the Georgia Public Health Laboratory for testing. Results will be available later next week. NCHD will provide more information as the investigation continues.
