Learning and Growing

The Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD) Program addresses health and youth development issues for at-risk youth, ages 10-19, in various counties in the District. A comprehensive youth development system educates and empowers teenagers with information and skills to make intelligent decisions in the areas of:

  • Teen sexuality
  • Obesity
  • Alcohol and substance abuse
  • Tobacco use

A signature program of AHYD is the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP)offered in Macon-Bibb County. Macon-Bibb County is one of 10 counties in Georgia with the highest teen pregnancy and STD rates. The purpose of PREP is to reduce and prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS among teenagers. PREP is provided through a grant from the Department of Human Resources (DHR). PREP is offered to teenagers, 13-19, over several weeks in various settings:

  • After School Programs
  • Summer Camps
  • Foster Care Homes
  • Colleges (Ages 17-19)
  • Churches
  • Recreation Centers

In an effort to maximize resources and services, AHYD’ Youth Development Coordinator facilitates communication and collaboration:

  • Government agencies
  • Faith-based
  • Schools (middle, high and college)
  • Private and civic groups

AHYD provides support to these youth-serving organizations in the form of

  • Program/event design and restructuring
  • Professional development
  • Parent empowerment sessions
  • Resources (brochures, teen incentives, etc.)
  • Financial support
  • Marketing and recruitment
