Winter Weather Approaches Central Georgia

SHARE

The National Weather Service has predicted that winter weather is on its way to our area. Forecasters are showing an increasing likelihood of wintry precipitation, mainly snow, across North and Central Georgia Friday evening into Saturday.

As of Thursday, January 5, the rain/snow line runs from Columbus to Macon and Eatonton. There is a medium to high chance of snow accumulating across North and Central Georgia late Friday night through early Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to reach below 40 degrees, so it is important for everyone to protect themselves from winter weather.

We will continue to update this page as weather conditions change. Make sure to stay informed and keep up-to-date with the latest information throughout the weekend.

What can you do to prepare?

24-48 Hours Before Winter Weather

  • Check your family’s emergency supplies for both your home and any vehicles. All kits should include an NOAA Weather Radio to receive any alerts related to the weather.
  • Make plans in the event that your children’s schools will close. This event is predicted to only last Friday evening through Saturday, but be prepared for possible closures due to icy roads and slick spots on bridges and overpasses.
  • Ensure you have multiple ways to get updates about weather conditions.
  • Check on local family, friends and neighbors, especially those with functional and access needs, and offer to help with preparations.
  • If you or someone you know depends on electricity to operate medical equipment, have a plan established in the event of an extended power disruption.

12-24 Hours Before Winter Weather

  • Make sure all mobile devices are charging or fully charged. If you have an emergency charging option, make sure it is functional in case of power failure.
  • Prepare bottles of frozen water or bags of ice to preserve food in the event of an electrical outage.
  • Make sure your home’s heating options are ready and safe. Only use space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements. Ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector.
  • Continue monitoring weather reports and forecasts.
  • Finalize any plans to stay home or elsewhere during the storm.

Under 12 Hours Before Winter Weather

  • Avoid unnecessary travel – if you can postpone a trip say home.
  • Continue to keep electronic devices charged.
  • Stay informed by keeping up-to-date with weather alerts by listening to your NOAA Weather Radio or another trusted source of information.
  • Check in with family, friends and neighbors to make sure they are safe and ready.

Dialysis Patients

If you have your regular dialysis appointment scheduled during the upcoming winter weather, it is important to prepare in case weather conditions lead to an inability to travel. You can prepare for winter weather by following these tips taken from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In Need of a Warm Space?

The Macon-Bibb County EMA and the Salvation Army of Central Georgia are providing a warming center for anyone in need of protection from the cold weather. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees the warming center will open at 1955 Broadway in Macon and provide a safe, warm space for those in need. It is important for everyone to stay warm and safe during winter weather. If you know anyone that may benefit from a warming center, share this information with them.
