Wilkinson County Health Department Invites All County Residents to Attend Grand Re-Opening

Wilkinson County Health Department will unveil its renovated facility during an open house Dec. 12, 2 – 5 p.m., at 123 High Hill St. in Irwinton. During the event, health department staff will give attendees a tour of the updated health department and provide free blood pressure screenings and HIV tests. The health department will also offer light refreshments and the chance to win a variety of door prizes.

“We’re very proud of the improvements to our health department,” said Wilkinson County Nurse Manager Jessica Yates. “This is another step in our continuous process to give our clients the best experience possible. People can tell a lot about a place by how it looks, and our new look says we’re a facility where people can find expert care.”

Over the course of five months, the $75,000 renovation turned the 30-year-old health department into a modern medical facility to serve the current and future heath care needs of Wilkinson County. The updates to the building include an expanded reception area, improved WIC program offices, equipping an additional exam room with telemedicine capability, painting the entire interior and replacing the flooring throughout the health department. In addition, the facility has been equipped with new meeting and conference room furniture, new signage and landscaping.

One of the most interesting additions to the health department is a public health historical display. During the renovation, health department staff gathered old records and equipment, including medical equipment dating back to the 1940s and 50s. These artifacts stand as a testament to the advances in public health and are proudly displayed in the building’s conference room to showcase the history of public health in Wilkinson County.

Wilkinson County Health Department offers everyone access to a wide array of clinical, environmental and educational services. The health department’s staff is dedicated to protecting the community from illness and other public health threats. Residents who come for the open house are encouraged to stay for the Wilkinson County board of health meeting that follows the event. Prior to the meeting, the board will be honoring Dr. Cyler Garner, who will be leaving the board of health after over 40 years of service.
