Taking Control of Childhood Asthma

SHARE

Does your child have asthma? Children’s Medical Services can help.

Asthma

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma is a disease that affects the lungs.  The symptoms associated with asthma are: wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and nighttime or early morning coughing. While asthma can be triggered by environmental factors, avoiding these triggers and taking medication(s) can alleviate symptoms and control the severity of asthma attacks.

Asthma Population

While anyone can be susceptible to the onset of asthma, children are especially at risk for the development of asthma. Because children’s lungs are not fully mature, early sensitization and a predisposition to asthma can lead to its development. In Georgia, about 12 percent of children aged 0-17 years have asthma which can lead to the persistence of asthma throughout adulthood.

How We Can Help

The North Central Health District offers services to meet the needs of communities throughout Middle Georgia. Specifically, Children’s Medical Services directly provides and/or coordinates specialty medical evaluations and treatment for eligible children (birth to age 21) with chronic medical conditions who meet medical and financial eligibility. These services can offer comprehensive support in an effort to combat asthma.
