April is STD Awareness Month

SHARE

April is recognized as STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Awareness Month in the health community.  The purpose of STD month is to create awareness regarding the cause, testing, treatment, education and cost of sexually transmitted diseases.  The fact that 20 million new infections occur each year in the United States justifies the need for such awareness and candid Talk.  Unfortunately, 50% of STD infections occur among young people, ages 15-24.  For the first time in 10 years, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis have increased simultaneously. There are at least 4 STDs that are not curable. While this data seems dismal, there is hope as STDs are 100% preventable by practicing abstinence or using a latex condom and/or dental dam every time you engage in anal, oral or vaginal sex. It is also important to get Tested regularly if you are sexually active.

In the North Central Health District, the Office of Adolescent Health & Youth Development and the Infectious Disease Unit have partnered to create awareness in as many geographical areas as possible:   Hancock County High School, Wilkinson County High School, Georgia College & State University, Ft. Valley State University and youth programs in Bibb County.  Awareness and education at the high schools will coincide with PROM activities.  Using social media like Facebook & Twitter (#STD16NCHD), anyone can access facts, prevention strategies, referral services for Treatment, and submit questions or comments regarding Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
